Confederate Dead Memorial
Main St at Courthouse Square
Edgefield, Edgefield County, South Carolina
"Erected by the women of Edgefield S.C.to the memory of their Confederate dead"
South Carolina can be considered the "Deep South" in many ways, one of them being the fact that it was the first State of seceed in the process of forming the Confederate States of America. Although this is a tall obelisk, I believe it to be the most reserved form of tribute possible in this county. It was erected by a Ladies Memorial Association, not the Daughters or any other Confederate veterans organization. It carries no dedication to "The Cause" nor does it make any mention of the righteous nature of those who fought.
This is a reminder of those who died from those who loved them. I hope it is not defiled in any way or removed in the dead of night.
