As a platoon commander in 2003, he led his Marines into Iraq for Operation Iraqui Freedom. Later in that same operation he was a Force Recon commander and infantry company commander. He was promoted to O-4 in 2009. The promotion ceremony took place in front of the Iwo Jim Mearine Memorial in Washington, D.C. During his career had been deployed seven times to combat assignments in Iraq, Afghanistan and Africa.
Graczyk died on July 12, 2011, as the result of a BASE jumping accident in Switzerland. A scholarship fund has been established in his name that provides financial assitance each year to the graduating valedictorian of Timberlane Regional. His webside sells a custom snow ski in his memory, with the profits going to the fund.
Contributing five sons from one community through four wars doesn't seem like much, but Atkinson has never been very large. In 1920 there were just over 400 residents. These sacrifices were felt and still reverberate through the community.
