"Erected by The Blue Star Mothers of America, Hiawatha Chapter 148"
"Dedicated to those who gave their lives in World War II in the cause of all freedoms"
"In honor and remembrance of those who served in the armed forces of the United States"
A pair of marble tableau's showcase the efforts of the Blue Star Mothers in Chippewa County. The World War I markers need a little work; but one must realize that war was nearly 100 years ago and markers of this type have usually been in place for several decades. It's difficult to keep them looking new.
One of the men remembered her is Tec5, Frank Sauro, 68th Tank Bn, 6th Armoured Division. The "Silver Eagles" left New York harbor on the 11th of February, 1944 and made the dangerous winter crossing of the North Atlantic to disembark in England thirteen days later. They did not make the D Day landing, as some might assume. Rather, the unit arrived in France on July 22, seven days short of Sauro's 26th birthday. Only ten weeks later he was dead.
Sauro had been raised in the area of the Les Cheneaux Islands, locally referred to as "The Snows." Winters along the St Mary's River are long and hard. Summers a time to revel in the weak warmth of an Upper Peninsula sun.
Frank's nine brothers and sisters at home mourned his loss, as did his parents. His parents were immigrants from Ripabottoni, Italy. Many of our soldiers, sailors, and airmen of World War II were first generation Americans. How difficult was it for their parents to send the sons off to war, potentially to fight against cousins and other close relatives.
After the war Sauro's body was repatriated and interred at Italian Hill Cemetery in Clark Township. Only 160 are buried there, but 39 of those tombstones carry the family name, Sauro.
This stop is dedicated to the memory of Kenneth Wonnacott, a Chippewa County native that did not return from World War II.
