There are more monuments at this location. At the time I visited there was a very large storm looming overhead and I simply didn't have time to safely get all of the photos I wanted.
The Korean war took fourteen men from Shiawassee, and the first losses came quickly after the war began on June 25th. Joe Wakefield was blown apart by a motar shell on July 25th. There wasn't enough left of him to collect and return home. Two days later, on the 27th, Cliff Naylor was taken prisoner near Anui, South Korea - he was later murdered in a tunnell near Sunchon, North Korea, on October 20th, 1950.
Bud Palmatier was killed at the Pusan Perimeter on August 26th.
February 1951 was a particularly cruel month for Shiawassee County. As the cold and snow gathered around the folks at home word came that Leston McCall died on the 4th. Hazen Hendrick and Walt Levitski were taken prisoner on the 12th. Neither Levitski nor Hendrick returned home, Hendrick died as a captive on July 17th and Levitski's fate was never learned.
After seven decades the faces are forgotten, the names are fading, and the families of those lost are still grieving. Only the highlights are mentioned in school texts now, and the minute details are left to historians and those trying to learn and prepare for the next war. It's always the grief that lingers. . .
