Tour Notes:

Researching the names of the fallen tells me that Cornelius Spiva was the first of the Union County men to die during World War I. Two men from Union that died in service during WW II seem not to be listed; brothers Jasper Hunter and William Hunter died in late 1945 and 1954 respectively. William died at sea and Jasper in a truck accident. The recollection of a local resident, Ethelene Jones, describes their loss and that of James Lance. In her words, "The young take up arms. Some die."

Although a fatalistic view, it's a very true statement. And for each generation that we send to war we must accept the fact. . . Some will die.

Another memorial area has been constructed in this area and I will stop again if the opportunity arises.
