"In honor of those from Cross County who bravely served our country and dedicated to the memory of those veterans who gave their lives"
Monument dedicated November 11, 2000
Okay, all you fling wing fliers from the VietNam era - check your log books. If you flew this aircraft on combat missions I want to hear your stories for inclusion in the Ride Around America website.
This memorial mentions the Medal of Honor award given to PFC William H Thomas for his actions on April 22, 1945 at the island of Luzon in the Phillipines. Mortally wounded when explosive ordinance took both of his legs, he refused to give in and kept fighting to help his unit hold their ground. He was just 22 years old. His remains were buried at the American Cemetery in the Phillipines. Although a native of this county, he was living in Ypsilanti, Michigan when he took his Oath of Enlistment.
